7-Day Sahara Walking Holiday: The Desert Caravan
A longer desert trek changes what you notice. On the first stage you may watch the horizon; several days later, the difference between a firm plain and soft dune sand matters just as much. This seven-day Sahara walking holiday follows a caravan circuit from M’Hamid through Sidi Naji, Aït Ounir, the Erg Zahar dune country, Zmila and Lanhiche before returning to the village.
You spend one night at a fixed camp and five nights at travelling bivouacs. The first day brings you to M’Hamid; days two to six contain the main walking stages. Day seven is the return leg to M’Hamid followed by the agreed road transfer. This is a seven-day journey with a six-day trekking portion, rather than seven full days on foot.
Five moving camps, one continuous walking journey
This route suits travellers who want several successive days supported by the same local team, with camp moving as the journey progresses. Camels carry your main bags and the camp equipment; you carry a daypack. Their included role is baggage support, so the presence of a caravan does not mean a personal riding camel is supplied.
Plan around four to five and a half hours of walking on the main stages, with the final return organised around onward transport. The intermediate level reflects repeated days outdoors, sand and exposure, rather than mountain altitude. Mobile camps have basic tent accommodation, with sleeping outside possible in suitable weather. A comfortable first-night camp does not turn the remaining nights into a hotel stay.
Highlights
- Aït Ounir, Erg Zahar, Zmila and Lanhiche
- Five evenings at travelling camps
Day 1 — Reach M’Hamid — meet the caravan team
Travel south from the confirmed pickup city to the fixed camp near M’Hamid. Marrakech and Ouarzazate are the transfer origins named in the standard inclusions; other city arrangements need a confirmed quotation. The route and sightseeing depend on the origin, so Atlas crossings and Aït Ben Haddou are not automatic for every guest.
- Arrival transfer; night 1 at the fixed camp.
Day 2 — M’Hamid to Sidi Naji — the walking rhythm begins
Start through the village’s palm landscape and continue into sand and open desert plateaux. The guide sets the pace and breaks to suit the conditions. Near Sidi Naji, the first travelling camp introduces the routine of unpacking, sharing a meal and spending the evening where the route ends.
- Main walking stage; night 2 near Sidi Naji.
Day 3 — Sidi Naji to Aït Ounir — away from the busier tracks
Continue through the Aït Ounir dune area, called Ait Outnir in the original programme. Scattered vegetation gives the sand a different texture from an empty dune panorama. The caravan carries what the next camp needs; the camp position is chosen for terrain and wind, rather than a fixed photograph.
- Main walking stage; night 3 in the Aït Ounir area.
Day 4 — Aït Ounir to Erg Zahar — a broader sea of sand
A long open plateau precedes the larger dune landscape known as the dunes hurlantes, or Erg Zahar. Reaching it on foot gives context to the view: the scale comes from the ground you have crossed. Any optional dune climb depends on weather and the group; the famous singing effect is not guaranteed.
- Main walking stage; night 4 in the Erg Zahar dune area.
Day 5 — Erg Zahar to Zmila — sand and stony margins
The route leaves the higher dunes for Zmila, passing desert plains and the stony margins described in the programme. The contrast gives the stage its character. Herders may be present, but meetings are not scheduled performances or guaranteed activities. Camp returns to the dunes for the evening.
- Main walking stage; night 5 in the Zmila area.
Day 6 — Zmila to Lanhiche — the final travelling camp
Walk towards the dunes of Lanhiche for the fifth mobile-camp night. By now the familiar tasks of a travelling camp have become part of the trip: finding your bag, preparing for a cooler evening and sharing the last dinner of the walking section with the team.
- Main walking stage; night 6 near Lanhiche.
Day 7 — Lanhiche to M’Hamid — return, then road travel
Complete the agreed return leg to M’Hamid and reconnect with the road vehicle. The timing must account for both the return from camp and the drive to your destination. For Marrakech or Agadir, request an extra night in M’Hamid or along the route if you prefer less pressure; that extends the trip and quotation.
- Return leg and onward road transfer; no seventh night included.

Who this trek suits
Be comfortable walking on successive days with little shade and variable sand. Tell the team what you normally walk and any constraints so they can assess the route. The final-day schedule needs separate confirmation.
A realistic fitness check

Camping and equipment
Bring broken-in shoes, sun protection, a headtorch, warm layers and a soft main bag. Check supplied bedding and sleeping-bag requirements. Confirm tent arrangements and facilities rather than assuming private bathrooms.
Water and meals
Meals are organised during the trek and tea is served by the team. Confirm the drinking-water supply and whether a filter bottle is needed for this departure: the existing guidance distinguishes longer walks from shorter trips.
Group or private departure
The advertised group format is 4–12 travellers, or a private arrangement. Ask for available dates and guide language. No calendar of confirmed departures is supplied by this page.
Plan the return before booking flights
Send your preferred pickup and drop-off cities with your dates. Agadir, Zagora or a direct M’Hamid meeting require agreed arrangements. An optional seventh night changes the standard seven-day/six-night programme.
Request your walking holiday
Use the enquiry form with dates, participant numbers and walking experience. Mention camp comfort needs and any extension so the team can confirm an itinerary and current quotation.
Included
- Agreed return road transport from Marrakech or Ouarzazate in the standard programme.
- One fixed-camp night and five travelling-bivouac nights.
- Local trek accompaniment, camp logistics and baggage camels.
- Full board during the trekking portion and team-prepared tea; drinking-water arrangements confirmed for departure.

- Riding camel option, including a mount requested for a child.
- Personal expenses and discretionary tips.

How many main walking days are there?
Days two to six are the five main stages. Day seven completes the return leg to M’Hamid and the road transfer; confirm its walking and transport schedule separately.
What is different from the six-day Erg Smar trek?
This circuit has five mobile nights and passes through Aït Ounir, Zmila and Lanhiche. It does not copy the Erg Smar 4×4 ending of that separate itinerary.
Are riding camels included?
The caravan carries luggage. Riding availability, including for children, is an extra to request and confirm.
Can young children join?
Ask for an assessment of age, walking tolerance, riding arrangements and camp needs. Do not assume a blanket age or fitness guarantee.
Does the trip include Erg Chigaga or Merzouga?
Neither is a listed stage of this circuit. The dune focus here is Erg Zahar and the named surrounding areas.
Can I add a night before the long return drive?
Yes, request an extension in the quotation. It is additional to the standard six nights and can move the road return to day eight.
