8-Day Sahara Trek from Marrakech: Erg Zahar & Erg Chigaga

Eight days from Marrakech, with six days on foot through the desert of M’Hamid. Walk towards Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga with a camel-supported caravan, then return to M’Hamid on foot before the road journey home.

The desert becomes clearer when you give it time. A firm plateau changes to loose sand; a tamarisk offers a place to pause; evening light redraws a ridge you crossed in the morning. This journey leaves room for those small changes, rather than treating the Sahara as a single overnight stop.

Marrakech transfers occupy the first and last days. Between them, walking and camp life set the pace. Our roots are in M’Hamid and in the nomadic families of this desert. We share that familiarity through the paths we choose, the care of the caravan and the ordinary hospitality of a meal together.

Two dune landscapes, one walking journey

Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga are separate dune areas. Reaching both lets you experience more than one view of the Sahara, with stretches of open ground between the sand. The approach matters as much as the destination: each walking day connects a camp, a landscape and the next stage of the caravan.

Walking with the caravan

This is a walking trek supported by camels carrying the main luggage and camp equipment. Carry a small daypack with water, sun protection and essentials. A steady pace, pauses and a longer midday rest make consecutive days more manageable. Camel support does not automatically include a riding camel for every guest.

A route prepared with local judgment

The stages below are a researched draft for a six-day walking loop. Our guide team must confirm camp locations and walking times before this program is offered for booking. Weather, ground conditions and the group’s pace may require adjustments; we explain material changes before departure.

Highlights

  • Six walking days between two Marrakech transfers
  • Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga in one proposed circuit
  • Return to M’Hamid on foot
  • Camel-supported luggage and desert camp life

Day 1 — Marrakech → M’Hamid

Leave Marrakech for a full day on the road, crossing the High Atlas and continuing through Ouarzazate and the Drâa Valley towards M’Hamid. The change is gradual: mountain slopes, cultivated valley and finally the edge of the desert. Stops serve the transfer; no sightseeing visits are promised in this program.

At M’Hamid, meet the team and settle into the fixed camp for the first night. Prepare the bag that travels with the camels and keep tomorrow’s essentials separate. There is no trekking stage today.

  • Transfer only — no trekking stage.

Day 2 — M’Hamid → Ras N’khal → Sidi Naji

Begin at the edge of M’Hamid, moving through the palm-grove area towards Ras N’khal and the Sidi Naji sector. The first day is an introduction to sand underfoot, the caravan’s rhythm and the practical habit of keeping water within reach.

Take time to find a comfortable stride rather than rushing ahead. As the village recedes, the camp becomes the day’s destination. Tea and the evening meal mark the transition from walking to rest.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 3 — Sidi Naji → Erg Zahar

Continue towards Erg Zahar, crossing open ground between dune sections. The surface changes repeatedly: a firm stretch may feel easy, while soft sand asks for shorter steps. Your guide chooses the line rather than following every dune crest.

Approaching Zahar gives the day a clear focus. Once at camp, enjoy the changing light from a nearby viewpoint if conditions and energy allow. The dune walk is optional; the day’s trekking is already complete.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 4 — Erg Zahar → Erg Smar → Erg Sedra

Leave Erg Zahar and continue towards the Erg Smar sector and Erg Sedra. This stage gives context to the desert beyond its large dunes: the Drâa landscape, traces of settlement and the places where a caravan can pause.

Listen to the guide’s account of the area and ask about what you see. We do not arrange staged encounters or promise access to occupied homes. The next camp is chosen for the practical needs of the group and caravan.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 5 — Erg Sedra → Erg Chigaga

Walk onwards to Erg Chigaga. Dune slopes and open intervals make this a day to conserve energy: take a steady pace, protect yourself from the sun and use the rest stops well.

At the dune area, leave your main bag at camp and take in the landscape without the pressure to climb every ridge. The evening is spent in desert camp; a sunset or clear night sky depends on the weather, rather than being a guaranteed activity.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 6 — Erg Chigaga → Oued Laatach → Kreeat Jmal

Begin the walking return through the Oued Laatach sector towards Kreeat Jmal. This is part of the trek, not a vehicle transfer. After several nights in camp, packing, breakfast and departure have a familiar rhythm.

Watch the ground as well as the horizon: sand, gravel and vegetation tell different parts of the desert’s story. The precise intermediate camp and the length of this return stage need the guide team’s operational confirmation.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 7 — Kreeat Jmal → M’Hamid

Complete the return to M’Hamid on foot. The reappearance of the palm-grove area brings the walking circuit to a natural close. This is still a trekking day; the Marrakech transfer begins tomorrow.

Allow time to unload the caravan, reorganize luggage and rest. The accommodation for this final night in M’Hamid must be confirmed by our team before publication; this draft does not promise a hotel room, shower or a second fixed-camp night.

  • Walking stage — time and camp details subject to guide validation.

Day 8 — M’Hamid → Marrakech

Travel by road from M’Hamid back to Marrakech via the Drâa Valley, Ouarzazate and the High Atlas. This is a transfer day with no trekking stage.

Road conditions, stops and traffic affect arrival time. Confirm the drop-off point with the team and avoid planning a tight connection or an international flight immediately after the transfer.

  • Transfer only — no trekking stage.

Who this trek suits

Regular walkers seeking six days in the Sahara and comfortable with simple accommodation.

Walking level and daily rhythm

Six consecutive walking days require comfort with sustained effort and simple camp life. Soft sand, exposure and repeated days can be more tiring than a level path at home. Exact walking hours and distances are awaiting guide validation; do not use this draft to assess a fixed daily mileage.

When to travel

Choose a departure with the team according to seasonal conditions. Cooler months generally suit sustained desert walking better than summer. Winter evenings can be cold, and daytime sun remains strong. Dates and availability are confirmed on request.

Packing for six days on foot

Bring broken-in walking shoes, spare socks, loose long-sleeved clothing, a hat or desert scarf, sunglasses and sun protection. Add a warm evening layer, headlamp, personal toiletries and a power bank. Request the current sleeping-bag and supplied-equipment list before packing.

Luggage and camel support

Pack the main bag in a soft, manageable format for the caravan. Your daypack should hold the water and essentials needed between stops. Tell us about mobility concerns before booking; support camels should not be treated as guaranteed riding or emergency transport.

Meals and drinking water

Full board applies during the trek, with breakfast, a midday meal and dinner. Tea and mineral water are included for the walking days. Explain allergies and dietary requirements in advance; suitability must be confirmed. Meals during the Marrakech road transfers need confirmation in the quotation.

Camp comfort and facilities

Expect simple desert accommodation rather than hotel facilities at mobile camps. Ask about sleeping arrangements, bedding and toilet arrangements before booking. Do not assume showers, mains electricity, Wi-Fi or mobile reception in the desert.

Respect for the desert

Carry out personal waste, leave plants and cultural sites undisturbed, and ask before photographing people. Follow the team’s guidance around camels and camp. Quiet observation often reveals more than moving quickly from one viewpoint to another.

Before confirming a booking

Send your preferred dates, group size, previous walking experience and any relevant needs. We will confirm route feasibility, daily stages, the seventh night, transfer arrangements, equipment and the full price in writing. This draft contains no scheduled dates or published price.

No. Days 1 and 8 are Marrakech road transfers only. Days 2–7 are the six walking stages.

Does the trek visit both Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga?

That is the intended route. The detailed six-day loop is a researched proposal awaiting our guide team’s validation.

Do we return from Chigaga by 4×4?

The requested program returns to M’Hamid on foot. A routine 4×4 return is not included in this itinerary.

How many nights are included?

Seven nights in total. The first is at the fixed camp in M’Hamid; the final M’Hamid night’s accommodation and the exact camp allocation must be confirmed.

How many hours do we walk each day?

The guide team must confirm the walking times for these stages. Sand, temperature and the group’s pace affect the effort; we have not inserted unverified numbers.

Is this a camel-riding holiday?

It is primarily a walking journey with camel support for luggage and equipment. Ask separately if you need riding arrangements.

What fitness is needed?

You should be comfortable walking on consecutive days and sleeping in simple camps. Discuss your experience with us before booking so we can assess suitability.

Are Marrakech transfers included?

Yes, the outward and return Marrakech–M’Hamid road transfers are included. Pickup, drop-off and meals on those days are confirmed in the quotation.

What should I pack?

Walking shoes, a small daypack, sun protection, layers for cold evenings and a headlamp are core items. We confirm bedding and the sleeping-bag requirements separately.

Mineral water and tea are included during the six-day trek. Confirm any additional drinks and arrangements during the transfer days.
