Ourika to Imlil: 6-Day High Atlas Trek from Marrakech

The road into the Ourika Valley is only the beginning of this journey. From the Setti Fadma area, the six-day trek follows village paths to Timichi, crosses the Tachdirt pass and descends into Imenane. It continues through Imsker into Azzaden, then returns to the Imlil side through Tizi Oussem and Aremd. You stay in guesthouses along the way, rather than moving every stage by vehicle. There is no Toubkal summit attempt and no Toubkal-refuge night. The interest is in connecting the valleys on foot and seeing how the landscape changes beyond the road.

A village itinerary can sound gentle until you read its second day. The existing programme takes you from Timichi around 1,950 metres over the Tachdirt pass, listed at 3,170 metres, before descending to the village below. That is a substantial climb and descent, followed by more walking days. Choose this route if you already enjoy sustained hill walking and want a multi-day journey, not simply a day excursion to Ourika. The cultural focus does not remove the effort of rough ground or altitude. Tell us about recent walking experience so we can discuss the departure and any changes required by snow or weather.

The paths link fields, homes and neighbouring settlements. Terraces and water channels explain how the villages use steep land; the changes between Ourika, Imenane and Azzaden become clearer when you walk rather than drive between viewpoints. We do not promise private home visits, a specific encounter with shepherds or the same waterfall flow on every date. Ask before taking portraits, keep out of planted fields and give people and pack animals room on narrow paths. Around Sidi Chamharouch, respect the pilgrimage spaces. Walking past this place is not a guarantee of entering the shrine.

The planned overnight stops are Timichi, Tachdirt, Imsker, Tizi Oussem and Aremd. Your guide leads the route, with the cook and mule team supporting the agreed programme. Main luggage is carried where trail and conditions allow; you keep the day's essentials in a small pack. Guesthouse facilities and room sharing need confirmation, rather than being treated as private hotel accommodation. We confirm the actual houses, guide language, meal coverage, pickup and drop-off in the proposal. The final day includes a walk towards Sidi Chamharouch and a return to Imlil before the Marrakech transfer, so it is not just a morning checkout.

The high pass makes this a real mountain crossing

Village trails are shared ground

The paths link fields, homes and neighbouring settlements. Terraces and water channels explain how the villages use steep land; the changes between Ourika, Imenane and Azzaden become clearer when you walk rather than drive between viewpoints. We do not promise private home visits, a specific encounter with shepherds or the same waterfall flow on every date. Ask before taking portraits, keep out of planted fields and give people and pack animals room on narrow paths. Around Sidi Chamharouch, respect the pilgrimage spaces. Walking past this place is not a guarantee of entering the shrine.

Five village nights and an organised walking team

Day 1 — Marrakech to Timichi: leave the Ourika road behind

Drive from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley, starting the trek in the Setti Fadma area. The source programme allows approximately an hour and a half for the transfer, depending on pickup and road conditions. Meet the mule team and arrange the main bags before walking. A broad path climbs towards the Tadrart area, where a lunch stop is planned, then continues through village sectors including Anfli, Tiourdiwe and Izougoughen. Reach Timichi, around 1,950 metres, for the first guesthouse night. Allow roughly five hours of walking. The village names orient the stage; a visit inside every home or named settlement is not an included promise.

  • Approximately 1½ hours road transfer
  • Approximately 5 hours walking
  • Start: Ourika/Setti Fadma area
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Timichi, about 1,950 m

Day 2 — Cross the Tachdirt pass into a new valley

From Timichi, climb via the Iaabbassen area towards the Tachdirt pass, given as 3,170 metres in the existing itinerary. This is the route's defining high crossing, with a different scale of mountain scenery from the first day's village paths. Views depend on visibility, and snow can change the demands of the terrain. Descend towards Tachdirt, approximately 2,200–2,300 metres depending on the part of the village, for the second night. The source estimates about six hours of walking. A description calling the descent easy should not hide the need for sure footing and energy after the climb. Confirm current route and equipment requirements with the guide.

  • Approximately 6 hours walking
  • Tachdirt pass: about 3,170 m in the source programme
  • Substantial ascent followed by descent
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Tachdirt

Day 3 — Follow the Imenane villages to Imsker

The journey continues down the Imenane Valley through the sectors of Tamguist, Tinghrine and Ikkis. This stage is about the connection between settlements: paths on the slopes, terraces below them and village life continuing alongside the trekking route. Lunch is planned near a watercourse before the final approach to Imsker. The source mentions roughly an hour of walking after that stop, but provides no reliable total for the full day. We do not present that final hour as the duration of the whole stage. The guide will confirm the complete walking time and lunch location for the operated route. Spend the third guesthouse night in Imsker.

  • Full walking stage; overall duration to be confirmed
  • Via Tamguist, Tinghrine and Ikkis
  • Source's approximately 1 hour refers only to the final segment
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Imsker

Day 4 — From Imsker into Azzaden, finishing in Tizi Oussem

Leave Imsker and cross through the Mizane-side paths and Imi Oughlad before climbing to Tizi n'Tacht. Juniper and holm-oak sections accompany the approach towards the pass. On the other side, the route enters Azzaden, with its villages and terraces, and continues to Tizi Oussem for the fourth night. This change of valley gives the day its character: the terrain beyond the pass is part of the journey, not simply a background for the climb. The source does not give a complete walking duration and uses a pass altitude that differs from other tours. Confirm the actual timing and pass details before departure rather than relying on a fabricated estimate.

  • Full mountain stage; duration to be confirmed
  • Via Imi Oughlad and Tizi n'Tacht
  • Continue through the Azzaden Valley
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Tizi Oussem

Day 5 — Tamsoult paths, Tizi n'Mzik and the Imlil side

The programme includes the Azib Tamsoult waterfall area before the crossing of Tizi n'Mzik, listed at around 2,470 metres. Woodland paths lead towards the pass, then the descent turns into the Imlil Valley and continues to Aremd, about 1,900 metres. Waterfall flow and exact access depend on conditions; no swimming activity is promised. The source gives approximately five hours for the day, but the complete timing with the waterfall approach must be confirmed with the guide. This is a walk from one valley to another, with a fifth guesthouse night at the finish, not an overnight at the Toubkal refuge.

  • Source estimate: approximately 5 hours; full waterfall routing to be confirmed
  • Via Azib Tamsoult and Tizi n'Mzik, about 2,470 m
  • Descend to the Imlil/Aremd area
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Aremd

Day 6 — Sidi Chamharouch, Imlil and return to Marrakech

Walk from Aremd towards Sidi Chamharouch, a pilgrimage place on the Toubkal approach, then return and descend to Imlil. The route includes the walk, not a guaranteed entry into religious spaces. A lunch stop is planned before meeting the vehicle. The source estimates approximately four hours of walking followed by an hour and a half on the road back to Marrakech via the Tahanaout side. This final morning still contains a real mountain stage. Confirm the drop-off point and leave time for onward travel; there is no sixth guesthouse night or included Marrakech sightseeing tour. The trek finishes with the agreed road transfer.

  • Approximately 4 hours walking
  • Sidi Chamharouch approach and descent to Imlil
  • Approximately 1½ hours return road transfer
  • End: agreed Marrakech drop-off; no sixth overnight

Who this trek suits

Hill walkers seeking a valley crossing with village stays, without a summit attempt

Preparation for six walking days

Practise consecutive hill days with climbs and descents, using the boots and daypack you will bring. The Tachdirt pass is above 3,000 metres in this programme, so the absence of a summit does not remove altitude from the planning. Discuss experience and any relevant personal requirements before booking. Snow can alter the crossing, equipment or timing. If you prefer shorter walks or need an adapted family programme, ask before reserving instead of assuming the same itinerary suits every age and fitness level.

Packing and support

Bring worn-in hiking boots, a comfortable daypack, a soft main bag, a season-appropriate sleeping bag, warm layers, wind and rain protection, a headtorch and sun protection. Water and essential personal items stay with you during each stage. Mule carriage depends on trail and conditions; confirm changes if snow affects the route. Ask for the equipment list for your actual dates, including any rental arrangements. This is not a promise of technical winter kit being supplied at no extra cost.

Guesthouses, food and drinking water

Five guesthouse nights and trek meals are included within the agreed programme. Confirm establishments, room sharing, bedding and shower facilities. Tell us dietary needs and allergies early so the cook can assess practical options. Drinks are excluded; ask about drinking-water provision, refills and any bottle charges. Do not assume stream water is ready to drink. Tents and mattresses apply only to an expressly agreed seasonal camping alternative, not an extra entitlement alongside five guesthouse nights.

Details to settle in the quotation

Send preferred dates, party size, recent walking experience and guide-language or room needs. We confirm the group or private departure, route conditions, exact services and transfers. In particular, request complete stage times for days three and four and confirm day-five waterfall routing. Flights, Marrakech hotel nights, personal insurance and discretionary tips are separate. Photos are landscape illustrations rather than a guarantee of season, weather or the precise overnight house allocated to your group.

Where does the walking start?

In the Ourika/Setti Fadma area, after the agreed road transfer from Marrakech. The first overnight village is Timichi.

Is it the same as an Ourika day trip?

No. It is a six-day mountain crossing with consecutive walking stages and five guesthouse nights, including a pass above 3,000 metres.

The Tachdirt pass on day two, listed at approximately 3,170 metres in the existing route. Confirm operated-route details and conditions with the guide.

How long are days three and four?

The original page does not give reliable complete times for those stages. Ask for the current route timings; day three's one-hour note describes only its final segment.

Are the waterfalls guaranteed to be flowing?

No. Water flow and access vary. Confirm the Tamsoult routing and complete fifth-day timing before booking.

Can families join?

Tell us ages and walking experience so we can assess the route or suggest an adaptation. It is not automatically suitable for every child.

Are water and equipment hire included?

Drinks are excluded. Required equipment and any rental costs must be confirmed separately in the proposal.

When is the return to Marrakech?

On day six, after the Sidi Chamharouch approach, descent to Imlil and road transfer. Confirm the drop-off and allow a margin for connections.
