11-Day Central Atlas Traverse: Imilchil to Aït Bouguemez
This eleven-day journey follows a continuous route from Imilchil to the upper Aït Bouguemez valley. Nine main walking stages link Assif Melloul, the Koucer plateau, Zaouiat Ahansal and Taghia before the final village paths towards Timit. The first and last days connect the route with Marrakech by road. Four guesthouse nights break up six tent nights. Choose this traverse for its changing terrain and the commitment of staying on foot for several consecutive days.
The route repeatedly changes scale: narrow passages give way to exposed plateau, then inhabited river valleys return to view. Taghia’s cliff setting is a midway highlight, not an included climbing programme. On the approach to Bouguemez, orchards and fields replace the higher pastoral terrain. The guide explains the landscape and local paths without staging private encounters. Seasonal herding movements determine who is present, and lakes on the plateau may be dry.
The published stages range from roughly three to eight hours. Day six is the longest documented day and includes a descent described as technical; day eight is about six and a half hours. Day nine aims for a high ridge objective around 3,250 metres before descending towards Oulmzi. The local team must verify passage conditions, any exposure, river sections and required equipment for your dates. This is not a promise of easy walking or a M’Goun summit ascent.
A qualified guide leads the route, with a cook and mule team for agreed luggage support where feasible. Tents and mattresses are supplied for camp nights; sleeping-bag arrangements, water and washing facilities must be confirmed. Guesthouse nights are at Imilchil, Zaouiat Ahansal, Taghia and Timit. We agree the actual houses and camps, sharing, meal coverage on road days and guide language in the proposal. The optional timing of visits to Imilchil’s lakes needs separate confirmation after the long arrival drive.

From gorges to open plateau and cultivated valley

Know the effort before choosing the route

Support that travels with the itinerary
A qualified guide leads the route, with a cook and mule team for agreed luggage support where feasible. Tents and mattresses are supplied for camp nights; sleeping-bag arrangements, water and washing facilities must be confirmed. Guesthouse nights are at Imilchil, Zaouiat Ahansal, Taghia and Timit. We agree the actual houses and camps, sharing, meal coverage on road days and guide language in the proposal. The optional timing of visits to Imilchil’s lakes needs separate confirmation after the long arrival drive.
Day 1 — Marrakech to Imilchil: reach the starting valley
Travel by road to Imilchil, allowing around seven hours of driving in the source programme, with stops affecting arrival. Settle into the first guesthouse and prepare luggage and equipment with the team. Isli and Tislit are mentioned among the tour highlights, but not scheduled precisely in the day-by-day route; any lake visit must fit an agreed plan rather than be promised after a long drive.
- Road day, approximately 7 hours driving in source
- Lake visits and timing by agreement
- Night: Imilchil guesthouse
Day 2 — Imilchil to Oulghazi: alongside Assif Melloul
The first main walk follows a broad track along the Assif Melloul gorge landscape. Villages, pastoral buildings and occasional cereal plots provide a human scale among the rock slopes. The source gives around five hours before the camp near Oulghazi at the gorge entrance. The campsite is selected by the team rather than assumed to be a serviced public campground.
- Approximately 5 hours walking
- Assif Melloul approach
- Night: camp near Oulghazi
Day 3 — Tizi n’Tidad and the descent to Taiddert
Continue through the Assif Melloul gorge sector, with a narrower canyon approach towards the plateau above. Climb towards Tizi n’Tidad, given around 2,700 metres, then descend to Taiddert. Snow or water conditions can change passage suitability; your guide verifies the line rather than promising identical access every season. Approximately five hours are indicated for the stage.
- Approximately 5 hours walking
- Tizi n’Tidad about 2,700 m in source
- Night: Taiddert camp
Day 4 — Aqqa n’Ouansa to Zerchane: another change of terrain
Leave the Taiddert plateau through the Aqqa n’Ouansa gorge route, alternating ascent and descent. The source describes oak and juniper terrain before Zerchane, around 2,000 metres. These passages give the day its variety instead of one long downhill walk. Allow roughly five and a half hours, with the exact camp and any route adaptation confirmed locally.
- Approximately 5½ hours walking
- Via Aqqa n’Ouansa
- Night: Zerchane camp
Day 5 — Across Koucer towards Almou n’Ouhanad
Descend through the Aqqa n’Taouet canyon sector, then continue towards Tagertoucht and the Koucer plateau. The change from river-side terrain to open country makes water planning particularly important. The lake at Almou n’Ouhanad may be dry and is not a drinking-water guarantee. Pastoral presence varies with the season. Around five and a half hours lead to the planned camp area.
- Approximately 5½ hours walking
- Water supply planned with team
- Night: Almou n’Ouhanad camp
Day 6 — The long descent to Zaouiat Ahansal
This is the longest published stage, about eight hours. Leave the Koucer side towards the Tizi n’Fzat sector and descend to the river before continuing to Zaouiat Ahansal. The source calls the descent technical: confirm current path condition, exposure and any support required before booking. Lunch is planned along the route. A guesthouse night changes the routine after four consecutive tent nights.
- Approximately 8 hours walking
- Technical descent requires guide verification
- Night: Zaouiat Ahansal guesthouse
Day 7 — The shorter approach to Taghia
Follow the Assif Ahansal valley towards Taghia, around 1,880 metres in the source. At roughly three hours, this is a shorter main stage than yesterday, leaving time to settle in and look at the village-and-cliff setting. It is not an included rock-climbing day or a guarantee of an additional exposed path excursion. Stay in the confirmed guesthouse.
- Approximately 3 hours main walking
- Village and cliff setting
- Night: Taghia guesthouse
Day 8 — Aqqa n’Tazzart and the climb to Mdint Jdid
Leave Taghia towards Imi n’Tazzart and the canyon route of Aqqa n’Tazzart. The source’s two-hour gorge section is only part of the day. Continue uphill towards Almou n’Toucht and the Anou el Manar well sector before the camp at Mdint Jdid, around 2,900 metres below Tizi n’Tighboula. Roughly six and a half hours are published; water at named points remains subject to local planning.
- Approximately 6½ hours walking
- Canyon section followed by sustained ascent
- Night: Mdint Jdid camp, about 2,900 m in source
Day 9 — Aourir n’Tamrouchtet to the upper Bouguemez valley
The planned line climbs towards the high point of Aourir n’Tamrouchtet, given around 3,250 metres, then follows ridge and pass sections before the Izoughar lake and pasture sector. The precise high route depends on weather and guide assessment; no summit success or full lake is guaranteed. Descend towards the fields and orchards of upper Bouguemez for camp near Zaouiat Oulmzi. The source estimates five and a half hours.
- Approximately 5½ hours in source
- High objective around 3,250 m, conditional
- Night: camp near Zaouiat Oulmzi
Day 10 — Village paths from Oulmzi to Timit
Follow the cultivated valley through the Ifrane sector towards Timit. After plateau and gorge days, the path now makes the relationship between fields, orchards and villages easier to see. Colours and crops follow the season; ask before photographing people and keep to field paths. Approximately five hours bring the last main walking stage to a guesthouse in Timit.
- Approximately 5 hours walking
- Via cultivated Bouguemez valley and Ifrane sector
- Night: Timit guesthouse
Day 11 — Ouzoud on the road return to Marrakech
Travel from Bouguemez through Azilal, with a planned stop at Ouzoud before continuing to Marrakech. The source gives approximately five and a half hours of driving, but the waterfall visit and other stops add time. Exact access, walking at the falls, local guiding and fees are agreed beforehand. Confirm departure and drop-off before arranging onward travel; a fixed mid-afternoon arrival is not promised.
- Approximately 5½ hours driving in source, plus stops
- Ouzoud stop, access and services to confirm
- Programme ends in Marrakech

Who this trek suits
Experienced trekkers seeking a sustained crossing with varied camps and village stays
Fitness and passage checks
Nine walking stages require sustained endurance and comfort on uneven terrain. Discuss recent multi-day treks with the team. The technical descent on day six and ridge sections on day nine need a current guide assessment, including any exposure or water passages; rope equipment is not assumed to be included.
Water, weather and equipment
Agree dates, water supply and contingency routes locally. Plateau lakes and wells are not guaranteed potable sources. Bring proven footwear, warm and waterproof layers, sun protection, headlamp and a suitable sleeping bag. Conditions can require a changed plan; do not assume a technical winter itinerary from this description.
Ten nights and practical camp life
Four guesthouses and six camps are planned, with tents and mattresses listed. Confirm houses, camp pitches, sharing, bedding, toilets and washing. Mules transport the agreed main bag where possible; you keep your daypack. Ask about luggage support through gorge sections and any equipment hire.
A proposal before a commitment
Send dates, party size, guide-language preference, experience and dietary needs. The source offers four to twelve or private departures, subject to confirmation. Agree meal boundaries on transfer days, lake visits, waterfall services and handling of route changes. Live prices and actual availability are reviewed separately.
