4-Day Toubkal Trek: Atlas Villages and Summit from Marrakech

A Toubkal trek can begin and end with the summit. We prefer to show you the mountain country that gives the climb its setting. This four-day journey starts at Imi Oughlad, crosses into the Azzaden Valley and spends its first night in Tizi Oussem. You walk village paths before joining the busier approach from Imlil, then sleep in a mountain refuge before attempting Toubkal, at 4,167 metres. Marrakech is your departure and return point; the walking is in the High Atlas. This is a mountain trek, with a substantial final day, rather than a desert excursion or a sightseeing drive.

The first stages have a different rhythm from summit day. Lower down, terraces, irrigation channels and paths between homes show how people work with the valley’s steep ground. Higher up, the trees thin, the trail becomes stonier and the refuge marks a change in both landscape and routine. We plan the days around walking, meals and practical rest, leaving room to notice the journey instead of treating every stop as a photograph to collect. Village encounters depend on everyday life; a private home visit is not promised as part of the route. Ask before photographing people and respect religious spaces around Sidi Chamharouch.

Choose this trek if you already enjoy sustained hill walking and want both an Atlas valley journey and a summit attempt. The first two days broaden the experience, but four days do not make altitude effortless or guarantee acclimatisation. The last stage combines an early ascent with a long descent to Imlil before the drive to Marrakech. We ask about your recent walking experience when planning the departure, not just whether you have climbed a mountain before. If your priority is short, gentle walks or private hotel comfort every night, tell us before booking so we can discuss a different route.

Your guide manages the walking pace and decisions on the mountain, while the cook and mule team support the agreed trek arrangements. Main luggage is carried where the route and conditions allow; you walk with the items you need during the day. Village guesthouses and the refuge offer different kinds of overnight shelter, and we explain that difference before departure. We will confirm the departure date, pickup, room arrangements, guide language and seasonal equipment in your written proposal. No summit, private room or language availability is assumed simply because it appears in a general itinerary.

How our trekking team supports the route

Your guide manages the walking pace and decisions on the mountain, while the cook and mule team support the agreed trek arrangements. Main luggage is carried where the route and conditions allow; you walk with the items you need during the day. Village guesthouses and the refuge offer different kinds of overnight shelter, and we explain that difference before departure. We will confirm the departure date, pickup, room arrangements, guide language and seasonal equipment in your written proposal. Day 1 — Marrakech to Tizi Oussem through the Azzaden Valley

Leave Marrakech early for the High Atlas, approaching via the Asni area to Imi Oughlad, around 1,450 metres. Meet the trekking and mule team before setting off. The climb towards Tizi n’Tachete, around 2,000 metres, leads through cultivated ground and stretches of pine and juniper. The pass gives the first sense of the valleys beyond the road. After a picnic stop, continue into the Azzaden Valley towards Tizi Oussem, around 1,950 metres. This first stage is about finding a steady pace with your daypack and settling into mountain travel. Spend the night in a village guesthouse; this is the first of two guesthouse nights, not a refuge stay.

  • Approximately 5 hours walking
  • Start: Imi Oughlad, about 1,450 m
  • Pass: Tizi n’Tachete, about 2,000 m
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Tizi Oussem

Day 2 — Waterfall paths and Tizi n’Mzik to Imlil

Walk towards Azib Tamsoult and the waterfall area above Tizi Oussem. These paths bring a closer view of the slopes and seasonal watercourses on the Azzaden side of the mountains. Continue via the planned return and crossing of Tizi n’Mzik, around 2,500 metres, with a lunch break along the stage. Descend towards Imlil, where the surrounding peaks replace the enclosed valley views. The final descent takes around two hours in the source itinerary; the full stage time depends on the route, stops and conditions. Your second guesthouse night is in Imlil. Prepare the bag and layers you need for the move to the refuge tomorrow.

  • Full walking stage; exact overall duration confirmed with the guide
  • Via: Azib Tamsoult and Tizi n’Mzik, about 2,500 m
  • Final descent: approximately 2 hours
  • Overnight: guesthouse in Imlil

Day 3 — Imlil, Aremd and Sidi Chamharouch to the refuge

Follow the Mizane Valley from Imlil through the Aremd area. Terraces and village paths gradually give way to the higher, rockier approach. The route passes Sidi Chamharouch, a pilgrimage place whose religious spaces should be treated respectfully; access to the shrine itself is not part of a guaranteed visit. Continue up the mule path to the Toubkal refuge area, around 3,200 metres. Allow roughly six hours of walking, with a measured pace rather than a race to the overnight stop. On arrival, eat, organise your summit-day kit and rest. Expect simple, shared mountain-refuge facilities and discuss any room requirements before booking.

  • Approximately 6 hours walking
  • Start: Imlil, about 1,800 m
  • Finish: Toubkal refuge area, about 3,200 m
  • Overnight: mountain refuge; shared facilities

Day 4 — Toubkal summit attempt, descent and return to Marrakech

Start before dawn with your guide for the climb towards Toubkal’s 4,167-metre summit. The ascent gains roughly 960 metres above the refuge, on terrain that changes substantially with snow and weather. Reaching the summit depends on conditions and the group; the guide may adjust the plan or turn back. After the ascent, return towards the refuge, then continue down to Imlil for the vehicle transfer to Marrakech. The original programme allows around eight to nine hours of walking for the whole mountain stage, followed by the road journey. Keep the evening flexible and arrange your onward travel separately; a same-evening flight leaves little room for delays.

  • Early summit attempt, subject to guide assessment
  • Summit: 4,167 m; refuge about 3,200 m
  • Approximately 8–9 hours walking for the mountain stage
  • Return transfer to Marrakech; no fourth overnight included

Who this trek suits

Regular hikers seeking village trails and a guided high-mountain summit

Fitness and mountain conditions

Train for repeated uphill days and, especially, a long descent on tired legs. Previous regular hill walking is a more useful preparation than relying on general enthusiasm. Altitude affects the pace and cannot be removed by choosing a longer village approach. Tell your guide how you feel throughout the trek and follow the agreed pace. Snow can require specific equipment and suitable experience; confirm the conditions and demands for your exact dates rather than using a summer description to plan a winter climb.

Packing for four days

Bring worn-in hiking boots, a comfortable daypack, wind and rain protection, warm layers for the refuge, sun protection, a headtorch and a sleeping bag appropriate to the season and accommodation. Pack the main luggage in a soft bag suitable for the agreed carriage arrangements. Your daypack should carry water, layers and personal essentials. In snow conditions, discuss crampons, an ice axe and any other required kit with us before departure; rental, fit, availability and price must be confirmed. Ordinary shoes and a warm jacket alone are not a winter equipment plan.

Meals, water and nights

Trek meals are included within the agreed programme and prepared with the trekking team. Tell us about dietary requirements and allergies before booking so we can discuss what is practical, rather than assuming any request can be met automatically. Drinks are excluded: confirm drinking-water supply, refill arrangements and any bottled-water costs. The three nights are two guesthouse stays and one refuge stay. Shared refuge facilities are part of mountain travel, and heating, showers and private sleeping space should not be assumed. Seasonal camping is an option only when specifically agreed.

Booking and return planning

Send your preferred dates, party size, recent walking experience and any equipment or room needs. We will confirm the departure arrangement, Marrakech pickup, seasonal route and what the quotation covers. Group dates and the guide’s spoken language are confirmed individually. Marrakech hotel nights, flights and personal insurance are outside this trek package. Leave room after the final descent for the drive and possible mountain delays. A request for availability starts the planning conversation; it does not reserve an unconfirmed departure or promise a summit.

Is this a four-day summit trek or a village trek?

It combines both: two village walking days, a third day to the refuge and a fourth-day Toubkal summit attempt followed by the descent and return to Marrakech.

Is the trek suitable for a beginner?

You need good walking fitness and the ability to handle consecutive mountain days, including a long final descent. Tell us about your experience so we can assess whether this route fits your plans.

How high is Toubkal?

The summit is 4,167 metres. The overnight refuge area is around 3,200 metres; the summit is reached only if conditions and the guide’s assessment allow.

Where do we sleep?

Two nights are in village guesthouses, in Tizi Oussem and Imlil, and one is in a mountain refuge. Private bedrooms and hotel facilities are not guaranteed.

Does the trek include Marrakech transfers?

Return road transfers between Marrakech and the trek’s trailheads are included in the agreed programme. Confirm your pickup point and return arrangements when booking.

Are bags carried?

The mule team supports main luggage where the route and conditions allow. Carry a daypack and confirm any snow-related carriage changes before departure.

Can I climb in winter with the same equipment?

Snow can change the route’s technical demands. Confirm required equipment, suitable experience and any hire arrangements for your departure dates.

Are water and equipment hire included?

Drinks are excluded and equipment hire must be confirmed separately. Ask for the current water arrangements and a written equipment list before booking.

Is the summit guaranteed?

No. Weather, snow, route conditions and the group’s condition can require a changed plan or a turn-back decision by the guide.

Can I fly home on the last evening?

The final day includes roughly eight to nine hours of walking plus the Marrakech transfer. We recommend flexible onward planning rather than a same-evening flight.
