6-Day Atlas Villages Trek: Azzaden, Imlil and Imenane
You do not need a summit objective to enjoy the High Atlas. This six-day circuit starts at Imi Oughlad, reaches the Azzaden Valley, crosses towards Imlil and Aremd, then continues through Imenane and the Oukaimeden area before returning via Oussertek. The route is built around the paths between villages, with five guesthouse nights along the way. There is no Toubkal summit attempt and no overnight at the Toubkal refuge. That changes the focus of the holiday: each day's walk matters in its own right, instead of serving only as preparation for an early ascent.
The valleys are inhabited landscapes. Terraces follow the slopes, irrigation channels lead towards fields and narrow paths connect homes to the next settlement. Walking makes those relationships easier to notice. A pass gives a different view, but the descent shows how the next valley is organised. The route includes the Tamsoult waterfall area and a crossing through the Oukaimeden sector; neither a particular waterfall flow nor an archaeological visit is guaranteed for every departure. We do not promise private home visits or arrange villagers as a backdrop. Ask before taking portraits, keep to the path around crops and leave room for people and pack animals on narrow sections.
The main stages are estimated at around four and a half to five and a half hours of walking. Passes, uneven ground and repeated descents make this more than a series of short village strolls. The source route crosses Tizi n'Addi around 2,900 metres on day five, so altitude and weather still matter. Choose this itinerary if you enjoy regular hill walking and want several consecutive days on foot. Tell us about your recent experience rather than assuming that a cultural emphasis makes the route suitable for everyone. Snow can change the feasible route; dates and any equipment changes should be discussed before booking.
Your guide leads the stages, while the cook and mule team support the agreed programme. The main bag is carried where conditions allow; your daypack contains water, layers and personal essentials. The nights are in Aït Aissa, Tizi Oussem, Aremd, the Ouenskra/Imenane area and Oussertek. These are village guesthouse arrangements, not a promise of five private hotel rooms. We confirm establishments, room sharing, the guide's language, departure dates and meal coverage in the proposal. Transfers from and back to Marrakech are part of the agreed trek, with the road journey on the first and last day.

What you see by staying on the village paths
The valleys are inhabited landscapes. Terraces follow the slopes, irrigation channels lead towards fields and narrow paths connect homes to the next settlement. Walking makes those relationships easier to notice. A pass gives a different view, but the descent shows how the next valley is organised. The route includes the Tamsoult waterfall area and a crossing through the Oukaimeden sector; neither a particular waterfall flow nor an archaeological visit is guaranteed for every departure. No summit does not mean no effort
The main stages are estimated at around four and a half to five and a half hours of walking. Passes, uneven ground and repeated descents make this more than a series of short village strolls. The source route crosses Tizi n'Addi around 2,900 metres on day five, so altitude and weather still matter. Support that leaves the walking to you
Your guide leads the stages, while the cook and mule team support the agreed programme.
Day 1 — Marrakech to Aït Aissa: the first crossing into Azzaden
Drive from Marrakech through the Asni area to Imi Oughlad, allowing roughly an hour and a half in the source programme. Meet the mule team and organise the bags before starting the walk. The trail climbs towards Tizi n'Tacht, around 2,000 metres, then descends into the Azzaden side of the mountains. The change is visible in the earth-coloured slopes, terraces and villages reached on foot. Continue to Aït Aissa, around 1,950 metres, for the first guesthouse night. Allow approximately four and a half hours of walking. The source's repeated transfer line is a wording error: the road journey belongs at the start, not as another drive after reaching the overnight village.
- Approximately 1½ hours initial road transfer
- Approximately 4½ hours walking
- Via Tizi n'Tacht, about 2,000 m
- Overnight: guesthouse in Aït Aissa
Day 2 — Tizi Oussem and the Tamsoult waterfall paths
Continue from Aït Aissa towards Tizi Oussem, then climb towards the pastoral area and waterfalls of Tamsoult. The day moves above the village valley before returning to it; the waterfall is part of the walking route rather than a promised swimming stop. Water flow and access depend on the season and conditions. Lunch is planned during the stage, with the actual menu arranged by the team rather than a fixed list of canned fish or dishes. Descend along the return path to Tizi Oussem for your second guesthouse night. The source estimates around five hours of walking. Carry the layers and water needed for a full mountain day, even though the night remains in a village.
- Approximately 5 hours walking
- Via Tizi Oussem and the Tamsoult waterfall area
- Flow and exact access depend on conditions
- Overnight: guesthouse in Tizi Oussem
Day 3 — Over Tizi n'Mzik to the Imlil Valley and Aremd
Leave Azzaden and climb towards Tizi n'Mzik, approximately 2,450 metres in this itinerary. The ascent gives a last view of the valley you have followed before the descent turns towards Imlil. Orchards and terraces return to the foreground as you approach the village paths leading to Aremd, around 1,900 metres. The source gives approximately five hours for the main stage. It also proposes an optional afternoon walk towards Sidi Chamharouch; discuss this separately with your guide, as it adds walking and is not assumed within the five-hour estimate. Respect pilgrimage spaces, with no promised entry to the shrine. Spend the third night in Aremd.
- Main stage: approximately 5 hours walking
- Tizi n'Mzik: about 2,450 m
- Optional Sidi Chamharouch extension: agree timing separately
- Overnight: guesthouse in Aremd
Day 4 — Tamatert pass and a night in the Imenane villages
From Aremd, follow the mountain paths towards Tizi n'Tamatert, around 2,200 metres in the source programme. Wooded stretches and village tracks give way to the pass view into Imenane. Continue towards the villages around Tinghrine and Ouenskra, with the guide confirming the exact route and overnight house. The original description also names Tachdirt and Tamguist; the stage is not sold as a guaranteed visit inside every named village. What makes the day distinctive is the passage into another inhabited valley and the close-knit pattern of buildings on its slopes. Allow approximately five hours of walking, then settle into the fourth guesthouse night in the Ouenskra/Imenane area.
- Approximately 5 hours walking
- Via Tizi n'Tamatert, about 2,200 m
- Exact village sequence and guesthouse confirmed before departure
- Overnight: Ouenskra/Imenane village area
Day 5 — Tizi n'Addi, Oukaimeden and the descent to Oussertek
Climb from the Ouenskra area towards Tizi n'Addi, approximately 2,900 metres in the route description, before continuing through the Oukaimeden sector. This is one of the itinerary's higher crossings, so the cultural focus should not hide the physical demands. Lunch is planned along the route. A visit to the area's rock engravings may be possible only if access, conditions and timing allow; it is not an automatic included activity. Descend towards Oussertek on paths through juniper country for the fifth guesthouse night. The source estimates around five and a half hours of walking. No skiing or chairlift ride is part of the programme.
- Approximately 5½ hours walking
- Tizi n'Addi: about 2,900 m in the source programme
- Rock engravings: possible only when specifically agreed
- Overnight: guesthouse in Oussertek
Day 6 — Back through Imsker to Imi Oughlad and Marrakech
The final walk descends from Oussertek through Imsker towards the Imenane Valley, then crosses the El Bour pass on a mule path through sections of juniper and holm oak. Reach Imi Oughlad, approximately 1,400 metres in the source, where the walking ends and the vehicle completes the return to Marrakech. A lunch stop is planned before the transfer. Allow around four and a half hours of walking plus an hour and a half on the road, subject to pace, pickup and conditions. This is a full final stage, not a direct morning hotel checkout. Confirm the drop-off point and keep a margin for onward travel. There is no sixth overnight included.
- Approximately 4½ hours walking
- Via Imsker and the El Bour pass
- Approximately 1½ hours return road transfer
- End: agreed Marrakech drop-off; no sixth overnight
Duration
6 days / 5 nights
Accommodation
5 village guesthouse nights; no summit-refuge night

Who this trek suits
Hill walkers who want village trails and valley crossings without a summit objective
Choose the route for the walking you enjoy
The absence of a summit attempt removes the high-summit objective, not the need for fitness. Prepare for several days with climbs, descents and rough village paths. Walk in the boots and daypack you intend to bring. Families should tell us children's ages and walking experience before enquiring; the itinerary is not advertised as automatically suitable for every age. If you prefer shorter stages, discuss an adapted route rather than assuming this circuit can be shortened on the day.
Packing and weather
Bring worn-in hiking boots, a daypack, a soft main bag, warm layers, wind and rain protection, a headtorch, sun protection and a sleeping bag appropriate to the agreed guesthouse arrangements and season. Keep water and essential personal items with you. Conditions at the higher passes can differ from Marrakech. Snow may require a route change, different equipment or a different departure plan. Confirm current requirements with the trekking team; a ski station on the route does not make skiing an included activity.
Guesthouses, meals and water
Five guesthouse nights and trek meals are part of the agreed programme. Room sharing, bedding, showers and exact houses are confirmed before departure. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies in advance so the cook can assess practical options. Drinks are excluded: ask about drinking-water provision, refills and bottle costs. Do not assume untreated stream water is suitable. Tents and mattresses relate only to an explicitly agreed camping alternative, not an extra promise of camping alongside the five guesthouse nights.
Ask for the details before reserving
Send your dates, party size, recent walking experience and guide-language or room requirements. We confirm the private or group departure, road transfers and exact arrangements in the quotation. The optional Sidi Chamharouch extension and any rock-engraving visit need their own agreement, including time and possible costs. Flights, Marrakech nights and personal insurance remain separate. Published images illustrate landscapes and do not guarantee a particular season, field colour or weather on your departure.

Does this trek climb Toubkal?
No. It explores the valleys and villages of the Toubkal massif without a summit attempt or a Toubkal-refuge night.
How much walking is there each day?
The main stages are estimated at around four and a half to five and a half hours. Pace, conditions and optional extensions can change the duration.
Is this an easy cultural tour?
It is a mountain walking circuit with passes and repeated climbs. Regular hill-walking fitness is needed even without the summit.
Where are the five nights?
In guesthouses at Aït Aissa, Tizi Oussem, Aremd, the Ouenskra/Imenane area and Oussertek. Exact houses and room arrangements are confirmed.
Can children join?
Tell us their ages and recent walking experience so we can assess the itinerary or propose an adaptation. Suitability is not guaranteed for every child.
Are visits inside private homes included?
No private home visit is promised. Guesthouse stays and walking through villages are distinct from arranged visits to other people's homes.
Is Sidi Chamharouch part of the main third-day stage?
It is an optional extension discussed with the guide. Allow additional time; the five-hour core stage does not automatically cover it.
Are the Oukaimeden rock engravings guaranteed?
No. A visit depends on access, timing and a specific agreement. Skiing and chairlift use are not included.
Are bags, meals and water included?
The mule team supports main luggage where conditions allow, and agreed trek meals are included. Drinks and bottled water are excluded unless separately agreed.
When do we return to Marrakech?
On day six, after the final walk to Imi Oughlad and the road transfer. Confirm the drop-off and leave room for delays before onward travel.
