4-Day Morocco Desert Trek from Marrakech: Erg Zahar

A short desert trip can still give you the experience of walking away from the road and sleeping where the caravan stops. This four-day Morocco desert trek combines two main walking stages with three nights near M’Hamid and along the route to Erg Zahar. The first night is at a fixed camp; the next two are at moving bivouacs near Sidi Naji and Erg Zahar.

This is a compact Sahara walking holiday, with a clear limit: the road journey takes the first day and much of the fourth. You trek on days two and three, then make a short walk to the vehicle meeting point before returning by 4×4 to M’Hamid. The onward transfer is agreed for Marrakech, Ouarzazate or Agadir.

A first desert trek, with the travel time visible

The attraction is the change of pace between the approach by road and the walking route. Palms and the dry Drâa landscape give way to stony ground and sand. Baggage camels carry the main bags and camp equipment; your own load is a daypack. Local support organises the travelling camps and meals during the trek.

The advertised main-stage walking estimate is around three and a half to four hours, to be checked against the confirmed route and conditions. Sand and heat can make a short stage demanding. Previous Sahara experience is not essential, but comfortable walking fitness and willingness to camp simply are important. This is not a promise of suitability for every age or fitness level.

Highlights

  • Sidi Naji and Erg Zahar
  • Two evenings at moving camps

Day 1 — South to M’Hamid — settle into the fixed camp

Start with the agreed pickup city and road transfer. Marrakech, Agadir and Ouarzazate have different approaches; Aït Ben Haddou is a stop only if included in your confirmed programme. At the fixed camp near M’Hamid, meet the team, have dinner and prepare the bags for the following morning.

  • Arrival transfer; fixed-camp overnight.

Day 2 — M’Hamid to Sidi Naji — your first travelling camp

The route leaves the palms and follows the landscape of the dry Drâa. Tamarisk stopping places interrupt the open ground before the walk continues over reg towards Sidi Naji. Camp is arranged near the dunes rather than inside the sanctuary. Ask the guide about the site’s place in local history.

  • First main walking stage; mobile bivouac near Sidi Naji.

Day 3 — Sidi Naji to Erg Zahar — reach the dune landscape

Leave yesterday’s camp behind and follow the planned crossing of dry desert terrain towards Erg Zahar. Firm surfaces and sand require different rhythms. The second moving camp places the evening in the dune landscape; a further dune climb depends on the group and conditions, rather than being a required part of the stage.

  • Second main walking stage; mobile bivouac near Erg Zahar.

Day 4 — Erg Zahar to M’Hamid by 4×4 — onward transfer

A short walk connects camp to the vehicle pickup. Return to M’Hamid by 4×4 and continue by road to the agreed destination. A lunch stop can be planned, but meal inclusion on road days should be confirmed. Marrakech and Agadir mean a long return; allow flight margin or request an extra night.

  • Short access walk, desert 4×4 and road transfer; no fourth night included.

What camping means here

Moving camps offer basic tent accommodation. Sleeping outside depends on weather. Ask about fixed-camp bathrooms, supplied bedding and tent arrangements; nightly hotel facilities are not promised.

Dates and departure format

The stated operating season is September to May. Availability and private or semi-private arrangements must be confirmed for your dates. A published seasonal window is not a list of guaranteed group departures.

Prepare and request a quote

Bring used-in walking shoes, sun protection, a headtorch, evening layers and a soft main bag. Send dates, party size and transfer cities; tell the team about dietary requirements and walking experience.

Is this four days of walking?

No. Two main trekking days sit between the arrival and return transfers. The last day includes a short walk to the 4×4 pickup.

Can I start in M’Hamid?

A direct meeting can be agreed. Confirm the first-night arrangement, meeting time and revised quotation.

Does the trek go to Merzouga?

No: it follows the M’Hamid–Sidi Naji–Erg Zahar route. Merzouga is a different destination.

Are camels included for riding?

Included camels carry baggage. A riding camel is an extra that needs advance confirmation.

Can children join?

Ask for an assessment based on age, walking ability and camp needs. A riding option is not a substitute for confirming family suitability.

Can I fly home on day four?

Avoid a tight same-day flight plan. The desert pickup and onward road journey need a confirmed schedule and contingency time.
